Roger Bacon (c1214-92) English experimental scientist, philosopher and Franciscan (Grey Friar); called 'Doctor Mirabilis'. Bacon imprisoned in monastery in Paris, sending manuscript of his "Opus Majus" to Pope Clement IV, using brother friar as messenger. The novelty and range of Bacon's ideas and experiments led to his imprisonment from c1277. Artist's impression 1867. Engraving
