Johann I (Jean) Bernoulli (1667-1748) a member of the Swiss family of mathematicians. Worked on analysis, calculus, celestial mechanics and mechanics. Made Cartesian theory consistent with Kepler's laws. Put forward concepts of Subtle Matter and Vis Viva.
