Prison hulk at Deptford
Caption
Prison hulk at Deptford. These convict hulks were an intermediate confinement between an ordinary gaol or transportation. Prisoners were used as labourers in the naval dockyards and can be seen here being taken by boat to their work. Hulks (Tenders) were usually old naval vessels that were no longer seaworthy.
