Hippolyte Fizeau (1819-1896) French physicist. 19th century. Measured the velocity of light on the earth's surface (1849). Used Doppler principle to determine velocity of stars in line of sight. Confirmed the wave theory of light. From "Les Merveilles de la Science", Louis Figuier, (Paris, 1870). Engraving.
