John Ross (1800-62) British polar explorer and naval officer. 19th century. In 1818 Ross led an expedition to search for the northwest passage. Accompanied William Parry (1790-1855) on Arctic expeditions in 1819-27. Led an Arctic expedition 1829-33, an Antarctic expedition 1839-43, and the Franklin search expedition of 1850. Engraving.
