Jons Jacob Berezelius (1779-1848), Swedish scientist, c1890. Berzelius, Swedish chemist, introduced modern chemical symbols and he discovered the elements selenium, thorium and cerium, and was first to isolate others. He accurately determined atomic weights, establishing the laws of combination and John Dalton's atomic theory.
