Pierre Eugene Marcellin Berthelot (1827-1907) French organic chemist and politician. (c1885) Berthelot worked on explosives and dyes, and proved that hydrocarbons and other organic compounds can be synthecised from inorganic materials. He was one of the founders of thermochemistry.
