Elisha Mitchell (1793-1857) American naturalist and explorer. Professor of chemistry, mineralogy and geology at the University of North Carolina. In 1835 he established the height of Mt Mitchell, North Carolina. He fell to his death at nearby Mitchell Falls while verifying his earlier measurements.
