Richard Monckton Milnes, first Baron Houghton (1809-1885), English poet and Conservative politician. Friend of Tennyson, Arthur Hallam and Thackeray, and early champion of Swinburne. One of Florence Nightingale's suitors and, although she declined to marry him, he was one of her constant supporters in her work.
