Louis VIII, the Lion (1187-1226) a member of the Capetian dynasty, king of France from 1223. In the First Baron's War (1216) against King John, Louis was offered the throne of England and was proclaimed king in London in May 1216. On 14 June he captured Winchester. His English support gradually evaporated and in 1217 he gave up his claim in the Treaty of Lambeth.
