Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), mother of James VI of Scotland and I of England, landing in England in May 1567, throwing herself on the mercy of her cousin, Elizabeth I. Mary spent the rest of her life as Elizabeth's prisoner and was beheaded at Fotheringhay.
