(Henry) Bartle (Edward) Frere (1815-84) British colonial administrator, born at Clydach, Breckonshire, Wales. Governor of Bombay (Mumbai) 1862-1867. Appointed governor of the Cape and High Commissioner in South Africa in 1877, recalled in 1880 because of his treatment of the Zulus. Engraving from "The Illustrated London News" (London, 7 June 1884).
