Marple aqueduct, opened 1800, over the River Goyt on the Peak Forest Canal which was constructed 1794-1805 from Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, England, to Marple, where it joined the Macclesfield Canal. The engineer was Benjamin Outram (1764-1805), civil engineer and ironmaster, and founder of Butterley Ironworks. The pierced spandrells lightened the weight of the masonry.
