Benoit de Maillet (1656-1738) French diplomat and traveller. He attempted to measure the age of the earth and came to the somewhat arbitrary conclusion that it was 2 billion years. From "Histoire des Philosophes Modernes" by Alexandre Saverien (Paris, 1762).
