Charcoal burners in Epping Forest, Essex, near London, England. The men and their families lived in the forest for the summer so that they could be on hand to attend the burning clamps whenever necessary. On the left a woman sits on a log outside the rough hut which would be her summer home. On the right is a screen to regulate the draught.
