Title
The countryside scarred by mining
Caption
The countryside scarred by mining. A typical scene in the Northumberland and Durham mining districts of northern England. On the right of the picture is the top of an inclined plane for transporting coal away from the pit head. The weight of the loaded wagons going down the incline hauled up the empty wagons to the top of the incline on a parallel track. In the background, right, spoil tips are being created, while on the left the chimneys of steam engines emit smoke. Engraving from "The Graphic" (London, 18 February 1871).
