John Hawkins (1532-1595) English naval commander and navigator. First Englishman to traffic in slaves (1562). As Treasurer to the Navy (1573) reorganised the fleet to confront the Spanish Armada. Engraving by Michiel van der Gucht (1660-1725) for Clarendon's "History".
