French postal service
Caption
French postal service. Sorting letters on the Paris-Marseilles express by the light of oil lamps. The expansion of the railway network in the nineteenth century greatly improved mail services. Dedicated overnight mail trains, or mail carriages attached to scheduled trains, enabled mail to be sorted en route to a distribution centre. Engraving from "Le Journal de la Jeunesse" (Paris, 1886).
