The Sloane Astrolabe English / around AD 1300. One of the earliest known European astrolabes. An astrolabe is a multi-functional instrument enabling the user to perform such diverse tasks as time-keeping (by both day and night) / surveying / determining latitude and casting horoscopes. They were used in Europe until the seventeenth century / and in the Islamic world until the nineteenth century. This is one of three astrolabes in the collections of Sir Hans Sloane that is now in the British Museum.
