Nicholas I (1796-1855) Emperor (Tsar) of Russia from 1825; Nicholas on his deathbed, priests saying prayers over his body. His ambition was to absorb Turkey into the Russian empire, an ambition opposed by Britain and France and which resulted in the Crimean (Russo-Turkish) War, 1853-1856.
