South Sea annuities share certificate London, 1784. The South Sea Company purchased British government debt in return for trading rights with Spain's South American colonies. Speculation in company shares led to ruin for many shareholders when the Company collapsed in 1720. The Company was restructured following the crisis and was still issuing shares into the 1800s.
