The Nivkh (also Nivkhs; Nivkhi; or Gilyak; an indigenous ethnic group inhabiting the northern half of Sakhalin Island and the region of the Amur River estuary in Russia's Khabarovsk Krai. Nivkh were traditionally fishermen; hunters; and dog breeders.
