newspaper's depiction of the Revolt on the Amistad was a small, two-mastered schooner. Built in Spain and based in Havana, it moved general cargo along the Spanish ports of the Caribbean. On June 28th, 1839 it sailed from Havana towards the port of Santiago de Cuba, at the other extreme of the island, on this occasion its cargo was some general parcels sent on behalf of the Spanish Governor-General of Cuba and 39 slaves, dispatched to a plantation.
