Portrait of James Watt, 1812 by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). Oil on canvas. James Watt (born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland 1736 - died 1819 in Handsworth, Birmingham, England aged 83.) Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose improvements to the steam engine were fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both Great Britain and the rest of the world. Birmingham Museum.
