French naval captain Gabriel de Clieu (c1687-1774) using precious water supply to keep alive a plant of Coffea arabica from the Jardin des plantes, Paris, on the voyages to Martinique c1720. By 1770 there wer 18,000 coffee trees on the island. Engraving, 1883.
