Eugene Boudin (1824-1898) Harbour Scene, oil on canvas. Boudin has captured the maze of masts and rigging along the quaysides of a Northern French harbour. The grey sky and leaden sea are rendered with a sense of constant movement, animated by breaking up the water's surface into single brushstrokes. The perspective is focused on a ship in the middle distance, thereby closing off the background beyond and keeping the picture space narrow.
