Strong coronal mass ejections on the sun have sent correspondingly intense storms of charged particles towards the earth, where they have also caused auroras over Germany. These auroras occur at an altitude of 70 to 800 kilometres in the atmosphere when the electrically charged particles of the solar wind stimulate the molecules in the atmosphere to emit light of a certain wavelength.
