Edward Spencer (born 1799), English lawyer who accompanied the balloonist Charles Green on many ascents. On 24 July 1837, a balloon piloted by Green and Spencer ascended from Vauxhall Gardens in London. The painter and amateur scientist Robert Cocking ascended with them to test his new parachute. Cocking left the balloon at an altitude of 5, 000 feet (1, 524 metres) and began his fatal parachute jump.
