John Jervis, Earl St Vincent (1735-1823), born in Meaford, Staffordshire. English naval officer who joined the Royal Navy in 1749 and reached the rank of admiral. Commander-in-chief of the British Mediterranean fleet (1796-1799) and made Earl St Vincent for defeating the Spanish fleet off Cape St Vincent. First Lord of the Admiralty in 1801. Retired in 1811.
