John Benbow (1653-1702) English naval commander, born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Vice-admiral in 1701, he encountered superior French forces under Du Casse in the West Indies off Santa Marta on 19 August 1702. His leg was shattered by chain bullets and he was abandoned by his captains. He succumbed to his injuries in Jamaica in October. He is remembered as the brave Benbow .
