Thomas Telford (1757-1834) Scottish civil engineer, born in Westkirk, Langholm. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to a stonemason and became the outstanding civil engineer of his generation. He was nicknamed the Colossus of Roads for the improvements he made to 1, 000 miles of roads.
