The staircase was designed by the Chemnitz initiative Die Buntmacher*innen. They won a prize for their idea in the Nimm Platz (Take a Seat) competition, which Chemnitz announced as part of its application for the European Capital of Culture in 2025. With the prize money of 2, 025 euros, the Buntmacher*innen were able to realise their idea
