The castle, which developed from a medieval moated castle with towers, curtain wall and moat and the park bordering the Pleiße, was rebuilt in the 19th century by the Münchhausen family. They were expropriated in 1945 and some of the Gothic furnishings were moved to Altenburg. Today the castle serves as a youth hostel
