Hardy, Virginia, Booker T. Washington National Monument. A sculpture by Lloyd Lilly in the visitor center shows the moment that slaves were freed on the former James Burroughs plantation. Washington was born a slave on the plantation in about 1856 and was freed from slavery in 1865. He went on to found the Tuskegee Institute
