Schwarzenberg/Erzgeb. is a large district town in the Erzgebirge district of Saxony. Built in the 12th century as a fortification to protect a trade route, the small mountain town developed into the centre of the dominion of the same name and the later Schwarzenberg district. The tunnel under the castle in Schwarzenberg was opened 140 years ago, on 20 September 1883, with the 17.33 km long Johanngeorgenstadt - Schwarzenberg line and was used until 1951.
