Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Phoenix Lake. A former industrial wasteland of 99 hectares has been transformed into residential, work and leisure areas and 24 hectares of lake surface. In the event of heavy rainfall, the lake acts as a rainwater retention basin for the River Emscher. Following the construction of a parallel sewer, the Emscher is now free of wastewater, having previously been an open, above-ground wastewater sewer, combined sewer with surface water and wastewater. The Phoenix Lake, a showcase project for structural change, is an artificial lake on the site of the former Phönix Ost steelworks in Dortmund's Hörde district, Europe
