Oberhausen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, renaturalisation of the Emscher in the Holtener Bruch. The currently straightened Emscher, shown here at flood level, has been given curves again and can meander through its new floodplain. The ecological conversion of the Emscher system consists of the construction of a centralised wastewater treatment system in the Ruhr region, the construction of sewers and the renaturation of the Emscher and its tributaries. Following the construction of a parallel sewer, the Emscher has been completely free of sewage since January 2022. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater, Europe
