In 1838 Paul Hippolyte Delaroche began an extensive series of portraits of Napoleon. This painting of "Napoleon I in his office" was finished in the same year. It was commissioned by the countess douairière de Sandwich and formed part of the collections based in England, which took over from French art commissioners. After the death of her husband, the countess settled in Paris with her children. Her daughter Catherine Caroline married Napoleon's son, the count Alexandre Walewski who was born out of wedlock. This first portrait commissioned Lady Sandwich was so well received that Delaroche created at least one other copy, which is the one featured here.
