In 1806 Napoleon commissioned his architects, Percier and Fontaine to construct the throne room in the Tuileries Palace. He enlisted François Gérard to do the paintings on the ceiling.
This watercolour shows the intricate design above the throne, which is painted using a combination of two contrasting styles and techniques. Gérard uses precise watercolour brushtrokes to show the architectural work of Percier and Fontaine and uses pen and ink on a colour wash to depict the two emblematic figures in a lively style.
