Kaiser had no shipyard or any experience in shipbuilding in 1940. Five years later, it owned seven shipyards, had become the largest shipbuilding group in the world and, up until the Japanese surrender in September 1945, delivered 1,490 ships (including 821 Liberty Ships, 50 escort aircraft carriers, 219 Victory Ships, 24 cargo ships for transporting various products, 45 troop transports, 87 assault transports, 45 LST, 12 frigates and 147 tankers, representing 15 million tons.
