The German battleship "Tirpitz". Sister ship of the "Bismarck", the "Tirpitz" was begun on April 1st, 1939 at the Wilhelmshaven (Germany) arsenal and finished in early 1941. Throughout almost its entire career, it remained moored in the Norwegian fjords, only rarely going to sea. Damaged by British pocket submarines on September 22, 1943 in the Altenfjord, the "Tirpitz" sank on November 12, 1944, in the Tromsö fjord by 5.5-ton bombs dropped by Avro Lancaster bombers of the R.A.F. Bomber Command.
