L'oeuvre illustre l'histoire du doge Francesco Foscari qui a dû accepter que son fils Jacopo soit condamné à l'exil après avoir été injustement accusé de trahison. Ce sujet avait été abordé par Lord Byron en 1821 dans sa tragédie Les Deux Foscaris, qui inspira à Giuseppe Verdi l'opéra du même nom en 1844.
