Title
Orvieto, Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
Caption
Orvieto, Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (or Duomo), the interior, Chapel Nova or St. Brizio Chapel, northern wall: "Pandemonium" fresco by Luca Signorelli, (1500 - 1502). Detail. On the left the supernatural events begin, while in the distance wars and murders multiply. It deals with the arrival of monstrous winged demons, from whose hands and mouths a fiery rain is emitted that invests a multitude of terrified people, who is pouring on the stalls outside the border of the painted arch. Particularly effective and well preserved is the tangle of seven young men in the foreground, with flashy clothes, dead or in the act of succumbing, followed by two mothers with their children and a group of young and old.
