Orvieto, Basilica Cathedral of S. Maria Assunta (or Duomo): the façade, whose building started at the end of the XIII century. Detail of the covering of the four pillars of the doors. These are marble slabs with bas-reliefs executed between 1320 and 1330 by Lorenzo Maitani with the help of Sienese and Pisan craftsmen
Subject: continuation of biblical scenes with Messianic prophecies. The following themes develop between the acanthus spirals: Adam or Abraham asleep; King David, King Solomon, Roboamo, Abia, Asa, Giosafat; Mary and Christ. On the sides the prophets with their tables. The scenes represent: Balaam; the vocation of Joshua; the Miracle of Gideon; David anointed king; Presentation of Samuel to Elijah; The children of Israel in Egypt; the bread and wine prepared by Melchisedech for Abraham; Crucifixion.
