Pierre Louis Farnèse (in italian, Pier Luigi Farnese), Duke of Parma, son of Pope Paul III, born in 1503 after the secret marriage and ordination of his father. In 1545, his father made him Duke of Parma and Piacenza. 5 years prior to this, he had been instructed to take control of Perugia, which had revolted against the Pope. He gave himself control over the town, devastated its' territory and allowed high-ranking citizens to perish by means of torture. He was an abominable man, and gave in to his tyrannical behaviour, devastated Piacenza by way of his plunderings and crimes, and was eventually stabbed to death by a noble of the town in 1547. He had 6 children, including, among others, Ottavio Farnese, who succeeded him, and Orazio Farnese, who married Diana of France, heiress to Henry II, King of France. Painting by Gerolamo Bedoli.
