Cosme Ier de Médicis Cosimo I de'Medici (1519-1574) was the first Great Duke of Tuscany, leading from 1537 to 1574, during the last years of the Renaissance. Having gained prestige from the Republic of Florence after having been elected as the figurehead, he restaured the Medici dynasty, and would go on to take control over Florence until the last Grand Duke, Gian Gastone de' Medici (1671-1737) took over the role. The governmental structures that he put in place remained there, even after he had been relieved of his duty as a result of the Austria-Hungarian Empire.
