Pont Neuf
Caption
Pont Neuf. The Pont Neuf is the oldest bridge in Paris. After the Pont Aval and the Pont Amont, it is the third longest bridge in Paris (232 m). Its' name comes from the fact that it was the first bridge in Paris to be made out of stone (previously the bridges were constructed of wood). Its' construction was decided upon in 1577, and the 2nd November of that year, Henry III elected a commission, tasked with overseeing the construction of the bridge, and the following requisite works. He delegated Claude Marcel, the Controller-General of Finances, to maintain the link between him and the Commission. The construction was authorised by licensed documents, from the King, on the 16th March, 1578.
