Title
Menneken Pis
Caption
The Manneken Pis, from its belgian name, Manneke Pis, also known under the name Petit Julien, is a bronze statue of fifty centimetres located in the heart of Brussels. The statue is a symbol of independance in the spirit of Brussels. The statue itself is a fountain, and depicts a small boy whilst urinating. In belgian, the words "menneke pis" mean, (in a flemish dialect close to dutch), "the pissing kid". The statue was designed by Jerome Duquesnoy and would have been put in place in 1619. It was protected by the Belgians during the siege of the town by the French in 1695. The current statue is a replica, the original having dissapeared during the 1960s.
