Caption
State in the Palace of Versailles. Lacoon and his sons. Constructed of marble by Jean-Baptiste Tuby (1635 - 1700). Hight : 2.3 metres. At the time of construction, it was considered to be one of the most beautiful of its time, depicting Apollon du Belvédère, Lacoon and his son, and constructed by Jean-Baptiste Tuby, Philibert Vigier and Jean Rousselet. It was completed in 1696. First put on display in Trianon, it eventually replaced Persée and Andromède in the 19th Century, to be positioned in one of the most popular places in view in the "Petit Parc", at the entrance of the "Tapis Vert". As a trojan and priest of Apollo, Lacoon was punished for having married his wife Antiope in the holy sanctuary, so two serpents were sent to kill his sons. This statue depicts Lacoon as he tries in vain to save them.
