Revolution. Jean Sylvain Bailly. Paris 1736 Paris 1793. French astronomer and politician. Statesman of the Third Estate, he read aloud during the serment of the Tennis Court Oath (20th June 1789). Mayor of Paris (1789 1791), he gave the order to open fire on a group of protestors, who, assembled together in the Champ-de-Mars, had demanded for the fall of the monarch, Louis XVI. Arrested in 1793, he was guillotined. He was responsible for his publication of a history of astronomy. (Académie Française). 19th Century engraving.
